CNS 2024: Day 3 Highlights

April 16, 2024

The third day of CNS 2024 in Toronto co included 4 symposia — on topics ranging from the neurocognitive underpinnings of meditation and mindfulness to the scientific study of subjectivity  — 2 poster sessions, a DEI workshop, the Young Investigator Award lectures by Peter Kok and Ella Striem-Amit, and the Fred Kavli Distinguished Career Contributions Award lecture by Kia Nobre. Check out some highlights in photos and tweets:

Poster Sessions D & E and Exhibit Hall:

Good morning #CNS2024. Day 3! Hope you’ll join us in Poster Session D and/or the Communications Open House this morning. It’s going to be a beautiful day to science here in Toronto! https://t.co/cIMGz32WNZ

Symposia and DEI Workshop:

We’re here learning about the role of attention in mindfulness and meditation, chaired by Erika Nyhus, who is giving a terrific overview to situate the context of this research #CNS2024 https://t.co/sYDbmfXQvf pic.twitter.com/R2hSHAIgnb

Her work has found brain activity differences that both have implications for brain health as well as could serve as a biomarker for meditation experience #CNS2024 @kathryndevaney pic.twitter.com/ZE0wGS1ueR

Norman Farb (@NormanFarb) discusses mindfulness in relation to depression, which his posits might be an interoceptive (internal attention) disorder#CNS2024 pic.twitter.com/DLlsSk9nMY

Mindfulness and meditation: inward attention as a tool for mental health
Learn about the neuroscience behind mindfulness practices, based on research being presented at #CNS2024: https://t.co/S31LooRWi8#neuroscience @EurekAlert pic.twitter.com/tnEwc21sEm

Learning about retrograde amnesia from @briantlevine’s talk at #CNS2024. Studying the extreme tail of the distribution can lend insights into the whole distribution of autobiographical memory.

— Nadezhda Barbashova (@Nadezhda_Neuro) April 15, 2024

Retrograde amnesia is associated with lower PTSD symptoms. If you can’t re-experience your traumatic memories, you are somewhat protected from the distress that comes with trauma. Interesting fact from @briantlevine’s talk at #CNS2024 – I wonder if amnesia may be adaptive?

This symposium is an interactive experience intended to teach conference attendees the fundamentals of coding for cognitive neuroscience experiments. Come join us in Sheraton Hall EF #CNS2024 pic.twitter.com/kRsdiXXk9p

Studying people born blind, deaf, or without hands gives researchers a unique window into understanding individual differences in brain plasticity #CNS2024 @StriemAmit pic.twitter.com/7CQLZAgdgC

— CNS News (@CogNeuroNews) April 15, 2024

Fred Kavli Distinguished Career Contributions Award lecture by Kia Nobre:

.@KiaNobre will be presenting her work on focus – how the brain anticipates, prioritizes, and selects information from the sensory stream and from memories at various time scales to guide behavior. Read about it in our #CNS2024 Q&A:https://t.co/hvNdXkATaz

— CNS News (@CogNeuroNews) April 15, 2024

,@kianobre ends her talk noting that it’s still early days for cognitive neuroscience, full of wonder…
Wonderful indeed!#CNS2024 pic.twitter.com/StsNmHPy8X
