CNS 2020 Virtual: Day 1, First Impressions

May 2, 2020

Today was the first day of a new type of scientific conference — an entirely virtual annual CNS meeting. We are excited to be able to pioneer this new format in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, to bring you all the great cognitive neuroscience originally planned for our meeting in Boston in March, but now with even more content and more participants from around the world. Welcome to CNS 2020 Virtual! Highlights from Day 1 included Michael Tomasello’s wonderfully stimulating keynote lecture on the origins of human cooperation, connecting with peers and friends in the Chat Lounge (while lounging with snacks), the first invited symposium on big data in cognitive science, an exciting Data Blitz, and a full poster and Exhibition Hall.

Here is a snapshot of some first impressions from the virtual experience:

Origins of Human Cooperation by Dr. Tomasello @CNSmtg: "... I invite you to go to your local zoo, whenever it opens again, next century, ...". This made me laugh and cry at the same time ๐Ÿ˜‚ #CNS2020

@CogNeuroNews #CNS2020 is happening, fully virtual. Aptly, @MPI_EVA_Leipzigโ€™s Mike Tomasello is giving a great video talk first, which is serendipitous because he has been giving talks based entirely on kids and chimps video clips for long! โ€” Itโ€™s moving to see the meeting on. pic.twitter.com/6P6Aok1W73

Symposium 1 was insightful, inspiring and reinforces the utility of big data analysis in cognitive neuroscience. #CNS2020 #BigData #cognitiveneuroscience @cnscongress @ACNS_Official

Just realized that for the first time, I can freely wander around all the posters in my session, while also standing by at mine (A31), something I always regret not being able to do at actual conferences. On the flip side, I haven't arranged enough snacks. #CNS2020 @CNSmtg

Glad to say that my initial ambivalence towards virtual conferences has converted to enthusiasm after the first excellent day of #CNS2020! User friendly interface, nice chat options, and the convenience of being able to fold laundry while catching up on the latest science ๐Ÿ‘ https://t.co/ljUF7kInnO
