We are now receiving nominations for the eleventh annual George A. Miller Prize. The recipient of the prize presents the George A. Miller Distinguished Lecture at the annual meeting of the Cognitive Neuroscience Society. This lectureship has been established by the Society to honor George Miller for his unrelenting efforts to establish the field of cognitive neuroscience. The lecture is to be presented at the twelfth Cognitive Neuroscience Society Annual Meeting, at the

The James McKeen Cattell Sabbatical Awards

For over half a century, the James McKeen Cattell Fund has provided support for the science and the application of psychology. The Fund offers a program of supplementary sabbatical awards ("James McKeen Cattell Fund Fellowships"). These awards supplement the regular sabbatical allowance provided by the recipients' home institutions, to allow an extension of leave-time from one to two semesters. ASSC Prize for Contributions to the Study of Consciousness (Conference/Symposium/Event)
Association for the  Scientific Study of Consciousness

The ASSC William James Prize for Contributions to the Studyof Consciousness

Each year one prize will be awarded for an outstanding published contribution to the empirical or philosophical study of consciousness by a graduate student or postdoctoral scholar/researcher within 5 years of receiving a PhD or other advanced degree.

The prize consists of:  a) An award of $1000 (USD),  b) Invitation to present a plenary address at ASSC9 which will be held in Pasadena, California from June 24 to 27, 2005 (Travel, accommodation, and registration paid by ASSC), c) Lifetime membership in ASSC.

Nominations, including self nominations, should be sent to Phil Merikle, Chair, ASSC Prize Committee (pmerikle@uwaterloo.ca).  The nomination letter should include a brief statement as to why the contribution is outstanding, and for co-authored publications, there should be a statement describing the nominee’s role.  To be considered, the contribution must be published or accepted for publication and be written in English.  Electronic copies of the contribution and the nominee’s CV should be attached to the nomination letter.

10th Annual Meeting of the International Society for the History of the Neurosciences (ISHN)
July 5th to Saturday July 9th, 2005

The 10th Annual Meeting of the International Society for the History of the Neurosciences will be held at New Hall, St Andrew’s University, St Andrew’s, Scotland from Tuesday July 5th to Saturday July 9th, 2005. The program will cover historical questions from the variety of disciplines making up the neurosciences. Details of previous programs may be found on the Society’s website.

The meeting will give a special place to considering the influence on the development of the neurosciences of the resurgence of medicine in Scotland between the 1700s and 1800s. The morning of one day of the program will be spent in Edinburgh at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, and the afternoon the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.  The RCSE is about to celebrate the 500th anniversary of its founding.

The Meeting is a residential one and will be held in 3-star, fully catered accommodation in New Hall on the St Andrew’s University campus.

The Society's website www.ishn.org already provides details of the accommodation, transport, and other arrangements and will soon include the call for submissions (papers, posters, and symposia) and registration.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison is seeking to fill 2 open-rank positions as part of a cluster of faculty positions in the interdisciplinary area of Cognitive Science. The aim of the cluster is to develop innovative and excellent research programs that will foster productive interactions among faculty and students across departments. These positions are part of a major initiative to build on the strong record of achievement of UW researchers in areas of Cognitive Science.

Researchers in all areas of Cognitive Science are invited to apply. This is an interdisciplinary search open to candidates with backgrounds in any of the allied disciplines constituting Cognitive Science including, but not limited to: Communicative Disorders, Computer Science, Education, Linguistics, Neuroscience, Philosophy, and Psychology. Faculty Opening in Behavioral/Cognitive Neuroscience at Rutgers
University, Newark, New Jersey

The Center for Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience at Rutgers University, Newark, New Jersey has announced an opening for an Assistant Professor, tenure-track, in Behavioral/Cognitive Neuroscience with an emphasis on human brain imaging. We seek scientists with a research focus on brain/behavior relationships that affect human mental or neurological function or dysfunction and who would be stimulated by the integrative focus and collaborative environment of the Center. LAB COORDINATOR (Faculty Position)
Visual Neurocognition Laboratory, Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School

Applications are invited for a research lab coordinator.  This is a long-term position with significant responsibilities and a great deal of independence.  Our laboratory uses a cognitive neuroscience approach for studying issues in visual cognition.  (More information about our studies can be found at http://barlab.mgh.harvard.edu.)  The research involves functional neuroimaging (fMRI), often combined with high-temporal resolution imaging (MEG).  The ideal candidate should be exceptionally organized, motivated and reliable.  Responsibilities cover managing most aspects of lab life: interacting with study participants, assisting lab personnel, handling the director's appointments and correspondence, grant management, IRB-related paperwork, dealing with MGH administration, purchasing, reimbursements, travel arrangements etc.  Involvement in the scientific aspects of our projects would be encouraged and would be dependent only on the candidate's background and interest.

Head of School: Reader/Professor in Psychology (Faculty Position)

The School of Psychology (RAE 5) is seeking an exceptional individual to provide strategic leadership for an already successful School, with particular strengths in developmental and cognitive neuroscience, developmental and cognitive psychology, and psychosocial studies.

The person appointed will have an established international research reputation, and have demonstrated effective managerial and leadership abilities in an academic or related environment.

Tenure is permanent; the post of Head of School is a rotating one and the successful candidate will be expected to fill it for the first four years of their appointment.

The post is tenable from 31 March 2005.

FUNCTIONAL NEUROIMAGING OF VISUAL COGNITION, Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral position to study the cognitive neuroscience of high-level vision with an emphasis on object and scene recognition.  (More information about our studies can be found at http://barlab.mgh.harvard.edu.)  The research involves functional neuroimaging (fMRI), possibly combined with high-temporal resolution imaging (MEG).  Experience in either technique is preferred.  Some acquaintance with UNIX, Macs and Matlab would facilitate a smooth start. The position would give the holder research experience in a variety of topics in cognitive neuroscience, as well as extensive training in using some of the best neuroimaging design and analysis tools.  Facilities include a 1.5T and two state-of-the-art 3T fMRI systems, as well as an evolving 7T system and a MEG system.  These systems are dedicated to research and supported by a large physics and engineering core at the Martinos Center at MGH.

The National Institute of Mental Health, a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), offers a two to five year post-doctoral fellowship at one of the premier research sites in the U.S., the 300 acre Bethesda campus of the NIH, near Washington D.C. which houses state-of-the-art neuroimaging facilities (MRI, PET and MEG) dedicated to research. The strong scientific environment and outstanding equipment resources at NIH make this a unique opportunity for an outstanding scientist.  Open to recent Ph.D.'s in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, neuroscience,neuropharmacology, computer science, or other applicable discipline; or M.D.'s with training in psychiatry, neurology, nuclear medicine, radiology or other relevant field. The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team using neuroimaging to map brain activity and genetic/neurochemical mechanisms of normal higher cognitive function as well as dysfunction in neuropsychiatric illnesses such as schizophrenia, those with genetic sources of cognitive dysfunction such as Williams syndrome, and others such as normal aging.  Familiarity with computational and statistical methods for neuroimaging (e.g. Unix, C/C++, MatLab, SPM, AFNI) confers an advantage but is not absolutely required. Cognitive Neuroscience Lab, SingHealth Research Labs, Singapore.

The lab (better known for research on bilinguals) conducts research relating to the characterization of cognitive effects of acute and chronic sleep deprivation using functional MRI. A second interest is cognition in healthy aged with a view to evaluating effects of intervention. We are performing a large longitudinal brain aging study that will generate huge amounts of data concerning healthy brain aging. For the first track, candidates should have a background in cognitive neuroscience or sleep research and have computer competency. Experience with fMRI is a plus but is not essential. For the second track, experience with aging studies, brain morphometry will be a plus. Computing skills will be necessary in this position. Key attractions are: unrestricted access to an optimized 3T scanner and a MR compatible digital EEG system, proximity and access to a large and varied pool of healthy volunteers and patients, relative independence and a strong motivation to discover new knowledge relevant to promoting human health.
