NIDA Funding of Brain Imaging of Negative Reinforcement (Conference/Symposium/Event)

National Institute on Drug Abuse, NIH

Notice of Intent to Publish a Request for Applications for the Brain Imaging Studies of Negative Reinforcement in Humans
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Notice Number: NOT-DA-08-002

Key Dates
Release Date: October 2, 2007

Issued by
National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), (http://www.nida.nih.gov)

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), with other possible participating NIH Institutes and Centers (IC's), intends to publish a Request for Applications (RFA) soliciting proposals for exploratory and hypothesis-testing research focusing on the use of brain imaging methods to determine brain regions and systems involved in negative reinforcement and avoidance learning in humans. Proposed studies do not necessarily have to be conducted in substance abusing populations, involve administration of drugs of abuse or treatment interventions, although such studies are encouraged. However, studies using only healthy human subjects to investigate normative brain mechanisms of negative reinforcement and avoidance learning must demonstrate the relevance of the proposed research to the understanding of addictive disorders. The RFA is expected to be published in late 2007 with an expected receipt date in March, 2008.

Mind
A Major New Exhibition
With Over 40 New Exhibits, Four Years in the Making
Opens November 9, 2007-December 31, 2008

In Mind, you are the exhibit. Experience your own thoughts, feelings and
actions in provocative and unexpected ways in this major new
5000-square-foot Exploratorium exhibition, four years in the making,
featuring over 40 brand-new interactive exhibits. In a very real sense,
you'll discover that the exhibits in Mind are actually within yourself.

For images, go to: http://www.exploratorium.edu/pr/documents/07-4Mind.html

Overview of Exhibits

Attention, emotion, and judgment -- cutting-edge research in the cognitive
sciences -- are basic activities of the human mind, and make up the broad
themes in the Exploratorium's new exhibition.

Background

Psychological phenomena are rich, mysterious, and often counterintuitive --
but they can be studied scientifically. What is often known as the
"cognitive revolution" in the psychological sciences began about 50 years
ago...

Mind
Special Weekend Events
Laughter, Clowns, Humor, Self-Expression, Optical Illusions and Other
Phenomena of the Mind
November 10 & 11, 17 & 18

In celebration of the opening of the Exploratorium's new Mind exhibition,
the Exploratorium investigates the very human emotion of laughter‹through
clowns, laughing clubs, films, and science. We'll also take a look at how
emotion is conveyed through the body. All events are included in the price
of admission to the Exploratorium.

Animal Cam, by Sam Easterson
Time-Lapse, by Jona Frank
November 8, 2007-December 31, 2008
In Conjunction with Mind

Easterson mounts tiny cameras on animals in the wild to record their
activities and points-of-view. See the world from the perspective of an
armadillo. Frank's images explore personal identity and social dynamics.

Research staff position at the MPI for Psycholinguistics (Faculty Position)

It is a research position in a very inspiring research environment, without teaching obligations; furthermore, considerable technical support is available, as well as access to state of the art research and neuroimaging facilities. The position will be available from the end of 2007 and has a term of appointment of 5 years.

We are looking for an experimental scientist with a background in psycholinguistics who is interested in undertaking research in our project Language in Action. Language is normally not used in isolation. We use it to make people do, feel or believe things, and we even use it to guide our own perceptions, reasoning, and actions. This project focuses on how language operates in the context of other domains of cognition, how it is influenced by and coordinated with concomitant actions (e.g., gestures) and action goals, and how it provides a setting for perceptual systems. A number of these issues will be investigated in a Virtual Reality Lab, an environment that allows us to study complex language use in experimentally well-controlled situations.

Candidates should be interested in undertaking research in the area mentioned above, and be willing to spearhead the research in our Virtual Reality Lab. An ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team is a must. Candidates should have a strong publication track record. A track record in supervising PhD? students would be welcomed.

Applications should include:
(i) a c.v.
(ii) a list of publications.
(iii) the names of two referees who would be willing to write letters of recommendation.
(iv) examples of published work.
(v) a cover letter describing research interests.

A postdoctoral research position is available in the
Laboratory for Computational Cognitive Neuroscience at UC
Santa Barbara, which is directed by F. Gregory Ashby. The
position is for one year (renewable for up to 3 years).

The research conducted in the lab combines cognitive
neuroscience, computational modeling, and empirical data
collection to study human categorization, attention,
learning, memory, decision-making, and emotion. The goals
are to understand the perceptual, cognitive, and neural
processes that mediate these phenomena, and to build and
test neurobiologically plausible computational models. The
lab conducts behavioral studies of healthy adults and of
certain neuropsychological groups (e.g., Parkinson's disease
patients), as well as neuroimaging (i.e., fMRI) studies. In
addition, single-cell recording data are used to test and
calibrate the computational models (although electro-
physiological data are not collected in the lab). For more
information, see the Lab web page at:
http://www.psych.ucsb.edu/%7Eashby/lab.htm.

The requirements of the position include 1) designing,
running, and analyzing data from fMRI experiments to be run
in the UCSB Brain Imaging Center (i.e., on a Siemens 3T Trio
MRI scanner, which is located in the UCSB Psychology
Building), and 2) developing, implementing, and testing
neural network models of the tasks run in the scanner.

The successful applicant will have a Ph.D. in cognitive
neuroscience, computational neuroscience, or a related field
(e.g., mathematical psychology, electrical engineering).
Experience with fMRI and strong mathematical skills are
essential.

Starting date is flexible. Competitive salary and benefits
will be commensurate with training and experience. Position
is available for postdoctoral researchers. Individuals will
be appointed into an appropriate title in the Research,
Project Scientist or Specialist series depending on
qualifications.

Review of applications will continue until the position is
filled. Please send a cover letter, CV, one-page statement
of research, 1 published article, and 3 letters of
recommendation to: F. Gregory Ashby, Department of
Psychology, University of California, Santa Barbara 91306
(email: ashby@psych.ucsb.edu).
