I WELCOME TO THE COGNITIVE NEUROSCIENCE SOCIETY NEWSLETTER

This newsletter is intended for CNS members only. It is a monthly
newsletter designed to update CNS members on events, job opportunities, and
related information in the field of Cognitive Neuroscience. The Newsletter is

Society will be seeing many exciting changes in the upcoming months to

Tammy Lo joined the Society at the end of June as Administrative Assistant. Tammy will be manning the office from Monday to Friday from 9 am - 5pm. Cathy Harding, who previously conducted all business associated with the CNS Business Office has been promoted to Executive Director. **
Due to increasing financial demands on the Society, CNS will be increasing
membership fees within the next few months. **
CNS is also pleased to
announce updates to the CNS website: --- The Cognitive Neuroscience Society
will be implementing Bank of America as the new online credit card system for
membership payment. We expect the new BofA system to be much easier to use and
a more detailed explanation of the new system will be featured in upcoming
newsletters. --- CNS now has an online form available for Newsletter

Online registration for ICCM2004 is now open. Early registration

Early registration: Students $50, Nonstudents $100 Full registration

These fees include
the cost of the program, the proceedings, the poster reception, the banquet, the
break food, and a few other surprises (i.e., the conference fee is surprisingly
low).
Full and half-day tutorials (on CHREST, Cogent, EPIC, and SOAR)
are taking place on the 29th of July, at an extra cost. ($40/half day for
nonstudents, $30/half day for students).
Registration for tutorials,
parking, and staying on campus at the dorms are all done on the same
registration page.
Those choose to stay at local hotels will make their

Plenary speakers are Ken Forbus and Michael Mozer. Special symposia
include modeling of eye-movements and the robopoker competition results. The

Fellow post is available for 2 years, funded by the Leverhulme Trust. The
successful applicant will join an interdisciplinary team of developmental and
cognitive neuropsychologists (led by Drs Apperly, Samson and Prof. Humphreys
based in the Behavioural Brain Sciences Unit of the School. The project will
investigate the cognitive basis of belief reasoning in adults with and without
brain injury. The primary activities will be to design, implement and conduct
experimental investigations with neurological patients and other adult research
participants, the collation and statistical analysis of data, and the writing of
journal articles. Applicants should have at least a good honours degree (2i) in
psychology or a related discipline. Knowledge of research design, evaluation and

CLINICAL
NEUROPSYCHOLOGISTApplications are invited for a Clinical
Neuropsychologist to work with Dr Marjan Jahanshahi in the recently established
Functional Neurosurgery Unit at the National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery.
This post will involve neuropsychological assessment of patients with
Parkinson’s disease or dystonia to select suitable candidates for new surgical
approaches to the treatment of these movement disorders and subsequent
monitoring of the effect of surgery on cognition and
mood.
The post is
suitable for a newly qualified clinical psychologist intending to specialize in
neuropsychology, or for graduates wishing to gain neuropsychological and
clinical experience prior to training in clinical psychology or before starting
a PhD. Applicants should have a good degree in Psychology or
Behavioural Neuroscience. Post available from 1st October 2004 for 1 year in the first
instance, starting salary up to the 3rd point on the
Clinical Psychologist Grade A scale, £19,684 pa on plus £2,762 pa London
Allowance.

One
tenure-track faculty position in behavioral/cognitive neuroscience is available
at the assistant professor level. Scientists with a research focus on
brain/behavior relationships that affect human mental or neurological disorders,
whose research bridges across two or more of the following domains
(molecular/systems/behavioral/cognitive/computational/clinical neuroscience) and

Position in Clinical Affective Neuroscience

Fellowship to oversee and develop a program of research related to emotion and
emotional processing in psychotic disorders. Initial projects will examine
neutral and emotional facial expression processing using ERP techniques, with
subsequent studies developed for other modalities, such as fMRI. Experience with

Post Doctoral Position Available
Georgetown University
POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP IN DEVELOPMENTAL COGNITIVE NEUROSCIENCE AT
GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY A post-doctoral position is available immediately at
Georgetown University, Washington DC on a NIMH funded grant that investigates
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) by integrating neuroimaging and
genetic analyses. The fellow will be involved in studies using fMRI to image
response to stimulant medication during performance of executive function tasks
in healthy and ADHD children. The fellow will also be able to initiate his/her
own research projects and will have opportunities to collaborate with a
multidisciplinary team including pediatric neurologists, neuropsychologists,
psychiatrists, fellows, graduate students, and undergraduate research
assistants. Experience in either clinical evaluation/ diagnosis of ADHD OR with

Postdoctoral position in fMRI/ERP studies of Traumatic Brain Injury or
Fear-Related Disorders. A 2-year postdoctoral position is availabe for
qualified applicants in the application of event-related fMRI and high-density
event-related potential studies of higher cognitive functioning in patients with
traumatic brain injury or anxiety disorders. The Clinical Cognitive
Neuroscience Laboratory in the McKnight? Brain Institute of the University of

high-density ERP data acquisition and analysis. Our laboratory has access to a

Post-Doctoral Research Associate in the Neural Bases of Speech and
Lexical Processing Brown University
A post-doctoral position in the
neural bases of speech and lexical processing is available from July 1, 2004.
The research program focuses on event-related fMRI to investigate neural systems
underlying perception of the phonetic categories of speech, mapping of sound
structure to the lexicon, and lexical-semantic processing. Facilities include a
1.5 T Symphony Magnetom and a newly installed research dedicated 3T Siemens Trio
MR system. Candidates should have an interest and some background in language
research and should have some experience working with functional neuroimaging
including fMRI design and analysis. Ph.D. must be completed before starting.

Post-doctoral position in Brain mapping at Harvard Medical School.
Multi-modality brain mapping lab. Our research applies brain mapping
techniques to both clinical problems in neurosurgery and basic questions in
cognitive physiology. We use multiple functional brain mapping techniques
(functional MRI, DTI, intracranial EEG, and cortical stimulation) to better
understand the brain basis of memory and other higher cognitive functions. We
also use these techniques to improve pre-surgical brain mapping for patients
with brain diseases. The successful candidate is a motivated and
independent team player who is seeking a highly productive research environment
with strong mentorship and multi-disciplinary collaboration. The position is

BOSTON UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
Description: A 3-year position is
available at Boston University School of Medicine, funded through NIH and
private foundation grants, to explore the neurobiological bases of language and
related social-communicative impairments in autism using structural and
functional MRI and DTI. The research involves collaborations
between the Lab of Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience, the new Center for
Biomedical Imaging (at BUSM) and colleagues at
Massachusetts General Hospital. Excellent opportunity for someone
interested in entering the field of autism and other neurodevelopmental
disorders.
Description: Candidates must have a PhD. in
relevant area (cognitive neuroscience; psychology) with expertise in MRI and
fMRI.
Responsibilities: Oversee several interrelated
brain imaging projects on autism, and manage staff and students.
Coordinate subject scheduling; design and program fMRI experiments;

POSTDOCTORAL POSITION investigating SYNAESTHESIA
University of Dublin, Trinity College
A postdoctoral position is available from October 2004 with a multidisciplinary group associated with the Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience (http://www.trinityneuroscience.com) studying the characteristics and familiality of synaesthesia. The research will involve a combination of behavioural and neuroimaging techniques to characterise the phenotypes of individual synaesthetes and to determine the familiality of these characteristics. Candidates should have a background in cognitive neuroscience (or a related discipline). Experience with fMRI and/or EEG would be highly beneficial. The position is available for 2 years initially with the possibility of a 1 year extension. Salary will be competitive and based on experience. Deadline: 16th August, 2004.
