Saturday, April 17th, 2004 9:00 am – 5:00 pm Hyatt Regency Hotel in San Francisco
This satellite symposium will explore the relationship between awareness, attention, and the brain. A stellar list of speakers from a variety of disciplines (e.g., neurophysiology, functional neuroimaging, cognitive psychology, and neuropsychology) will present their cutting-edge research aimed at understanding how information in our external environment is represented in cortex and how it reaches awareness.
The speakers are:
Marvin M. Chun, Yale University Patricia S. Churchland, University of California San Diego Melvyn A. Goodale, University of Western Ontario Hans-Otto Karnath, University of Tübingen Alan Kingstone, University of British Columbia Nilli Lavie, University College London Philip M. Merikle, University of Waterloo Robert D. Rafal, University of Wales, Bangor Frank Tong, Princeton University Leslie G. Ungerleider, NIMH
The satellite symposium is one event celebrating the newly established Center for Mind and Brain at the University of California at Davis. For information and to register for the satellite symposium, please see the following website: http://mindbrain.ucdavis.edu/content/satellite_symposium

Announcing a social cognitive neuroscience (SCN) satellite symposium to take place in conjunction with the CNS annual meeting in San Francisco, CA(April 18th to 20th). The symposium is will take place on Saturday April 17th from 9:30am to 4:30 p.m., will include a lineup of speakers presenting new research on self-perception/regulation, person perception and social cognition, and will begin with an opening address from the editor of the new social cognitive neuroscience section of the Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience. A special invitation is extended to those who have not yet conducted SCN research, but who would like to learn more about the psychological and neural bases of social constructs. For a complete list of speakers and contact information for the conference co-organizers (Jennifer Beer, Jason Mitchell & Kevin Ochsner), please visit: http://www.socialcogneuro.com/. Although registration is not required to attend, potential attendees are encouraged to provide their name and e-mail address at the web site. This information will be used to create an e-mail list for future updates and details. *********************************************************************** The Euresco Office is organising a conference on "Mind, Language and Metaphor", next April: Mind, Language and Metaphor EuroConference? on the Processing of Metaphor and Metonymy - From Computers to Neuropsychology chair: John A. Barnden ( University of Birmingham , UK ) Granada, Spain, 24-29 April 2004 This conference is part of the 2004 Euresco Conference Programme and directly accessible via http://www.esf.org/euresco/04/hc04184 ***************************************************************** *International Conference on Working Memory (ICWM-2) August 17-20, 2004 Kyoto, Japan * This is an open call for submission of posters and papers for the Second International Conference on Working Memory (ICWM-2) to be held in Kyoto, Japan from 17 to 20th, August 2004. This Conference follows on from the highly successful International Conference on Working Memory held in Cambridge, UK in 1994. We expect the Conference in Kyoto will provide a special opportunity for high level and productive scientific exchange in all aspects of current working memory research. The conference will involve a single session of about 40 oral presentations given by leading international researchers on working memory, plus two poster sessions, with the majority of the presentations as posters.
For more information, please see the website http://square.umin.ac.jp/jswm/ ***************************************************************** The Visiting Fellowship Program in Functional MRI continues to be offered three times per year in Charlestown (5 minutes from Boston), Massachusetts. It is sponsored by the Athinoula A. Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging and the The MGH-NMR Center.
The next program is scheduled for March 1-5 , 2004.
The March 1-5 , 2004 program is a 5-Day intensive workshop. Participants attend lectures, have ample time for informal discussion with the lecturers, attend a "demonstration" fMRI experiment, get some hands-on experience with data analysis, design a group fMRI experiment, and implement, execute, and analyze the data from that experiment.
The main focus is on the basics of the physics, experimental design, and data analysis of fMRI-based experiments. It serves as a rapid and thorough introduction to people new to the field, who are considering active research or are planning and carrying experiments based on fMRI. Many laboratories have found this an efficient way to get new people started (in contrast to having to wait for a full semester's normal academic program). Participants with a modest amount of experience in an fMRI-based laboratory, and who are ready for a more thorough presentation of the foundations, also report getting a great deal from the program.
The emphasis continues to be on theoretical basics, with hands-on experimental design workshops and detailed discussion of issues associated with data analysis and data-analysis-software packages. However, this is not primarily a course designed to teach participants the details of using any specific package.
For on-line registration and more detailed information regarding registration, accommodation, etc., consult the web page at: www.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu/fmrivfp <http://www.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu/fmrivfp> or send e-mail to: fMRIVFP@nmr.mgh.harvard.edu
