The Mind Research Network (Mind) and the University of New Mexico (UNM) are pleased to announce the upcoming fMRI Image Acquisition and Analyses Course to be held February 4th-6th, 2008 at the Mind Institute on the UNM campus.  This meeting is being held just prior to the Society for Personality and Social Psychology meeting in Albuquerque. This course will cover Statistical Parametric Mapping 5 (SPM5 and relevant SPM2 issues).
The course faculty include Drs. Kent Kiehl and Vince Calhoun of the Mind and UNM, and Tor Wager of Columbia University. The course will cover experimental design, image acquisition, image preprocessing, and analysis using the general linear model as well as Independent Component Analyses (ICA) of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data. The course is designed for fMRI researchers who range from beginning to intermediate skill levels. Participants in the course are strongly encouraged to bring laptops with Matlab 7 (or higher) installed.  SPM, custom code and toolboxes will be installed on the laptops during the beginning of the course. In addition, following the lectures, participants will be trained to analyze example fMRI data on their laptops using SPM5, the Group ICA of fMRI Toolbox (GIFT), and related SPM toolboxes, such as statistical nonparametric mapping (SnPM?). The course will be small, having only 30-40 students with many opportunities to work closely wit

h the faculty. For more information and to register for the course please see: http://www.mrn.org/latest/the-mrn-fmri-course.html CME credits will be provided.

COGNITIVE NEUROSCIENCE OF VISUAL KNOWLEDGE: WHERE VISION MEE (Faculty Position)
Department of Psychology, Tufts University

Sponsored by Tufts University, the American Psychological Association, and the Charles River Association for Memory
Dates: Thurs, May 29 - Sat, May 31, 2008 Location: Tufts University in Medford, MA
February 15, 2008: Deadline for poster abstract submission.
March 31, 2008: Deadline for early registration.
How can people interact appropriately with and understand the world they see around them? Research suggests that prior knowledge about the world influences visual perception and cognition at both conscious and non-conscious levels.  Emerging research on the neural basis of visual knowledge has begun to synthesize ideas from vision and learning and memory fields.  A group of twelve speakers has been carefully selected from the fields of Cognitive Neuroscience, Cognitive Psychology, Neurobiology, and Computational Modeling to discuss vision and memory, two important fields of Psychology that have proceeded largely in parallel. The goal of the conference is to enable interactions among cognitive psychologists, cognitive neuroscientists, and computational modelers who study vision, memory, and visual knowledge in humans and animals. This conference will serve to facilitate not only the cross-pollination of ideas among scientists in each field but also to promote the emergence of a new field of study focused on the brain basis of visual knowledge that incorporates key ideas from the established research domains of vision and memory. Graduate Student Positions (MSc?/ PhD?) in CANADA (Graduate Student Position)
Dolcos Lab for Affective, Cognitive, & Clinical Neuroscience, Departments of Psychiatry and Neuroscience, UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA

The laboratory of Dr. Florin Dolcos accepts applications for graduate studies on projects investigating the neural correlates of affective-cognitive interactions in healthy and clinical groups, using functional neuroimaging tools (e.g., fMRI, MRS).
PROJECTS in the Dolcos Lab focus on the following two main directions: 1. BASIC RESEARCH investigating the neural mechanisms underlying the impact of emotion on cognition in healthy groups. This direction focuses on identifying the mechanisms that are responsible for the enhancing (e.g., enhanced memory for emotional events) and the impairing (e.g., enhanced susceptibility to emotional distraction) effects of emotion on cognitive functions. 2. TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH investigating the role of individual differences in mediating the impact of emotion on cognition. This direction focuses on identifying the neural circuitry responsible for differential ability to experience, regulate, and remember emotions associated with age-, gender-, and personality-related differences, in both healthy and clinical groups (e.g., mood and anxiety disorders). For specific details concerning the projects, please contact Dr. Florin Dolcos (fdolcos@ualberta.ca) or visit: http://dolcoslab.med.ualberta.ca/

SCANNING takes place at the University of Alberta's In Vivo NMR Centre (http://www.invivonmr.ualberta.ca/), which is equipped with research dedicated 1.5T, 3T, and 4.7T scanners.
