International Conference on Working Memory (ICWM-2)
August 17-20, 2004 Kyoto, Japan

This is an open call for submission of posters and papers for the Second
International Conference on Working Memory (ICWM-2) to be held in
Kyoto, Japan from 17 to 20th, August 2004. This Conference follows on
from the highly successful International Conference on Working Memory
held in Cambridge, UK in 1994. We expect the Conference in Kyoto will
provide a special opportunity for high level and productive scientific
exchange
in all aspects of current working memory research. The conference will
involve a single session of about 40 oral presentations given by leading
international researchers on working memory, plus two poster sessions,
with the majority of the presentations as posters.

Scientific Approaches to Youth Violence Prevention

A New York Academy of Sciences Conference

April 24-26, 2004 , New York City

Organizers:

John Devine , Center for Social and Emotional Education, New York, New
York; James Gilligan, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia;  Klaus
A. Miczek, Tufts University, Medford, Massachusetts;  Donald Pfaff, The
Rockefeller University, New York, New York;  Rashid Shaikh, New York
Academy of Sciences, New York, New York

T he purpose of this symposium will be to summarize and assess the
current state of knowledge about strategies to prevent youth violence.
By focusing on violence committed by and upon youth (adolescents and
young adults), we hope to emphasize the importance of preventive, as
opposed to merely retributive approaches to the problem.  The symposium
will present violence as a problem in public health and preventive
medicine, rather than as a moral or legal problem.

The 17th annual Summer Institute will be held at Dartmouth College,
Hanover, New Hampshire, from June 28 through July 9, 2004. The two-week
course will examine how information about brain structure and function

year issues in CONCEPTS, ACTIONS and INTENTIONS will be studied. A
distinguished faculty will lecture on current topics. Laboratories and
demonstrations will provide practical experience with methods in anatomy
and functional imaging and their application to issues in cognitive
neuroscience. Applications are invited from beginning and established
researchers. The Institute provides room, partial board, and limited
support for travel.  This year's Institute Directors are Alfonso
Caramazza, Giacomo Rizzolatti and Michael S. Gazzaniga. For more

proposals that advance the state of knowledge in critical areas of
autism, from basic research to clinical applications. Our goal is to
support outstanding projects that involve innovative approaches and the
application of cutting-edge technologies. Applications are encouraged
both from scientists already focusing on autism and from those new to
the field of autism. All proposals must have direct and immediate
relevance to autism and related disorders. Scientific disciplines
include, but are not limited to, animal models, biochemistry, cellular
physiology, clinical research, developmental neurobiology, environmental
factors, epidemiology, gastroenterology, genetics, immunology,
microbiology, molecular biology, neural plasticity,
